Daedalus is a work of fiction. It uses some real places, organisations, and historical or public references; its fictional characters, dialogue and events are imagined and should not be read as statements of fact about any real person. Any other resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is coincidental.

Use of AI

I began writing Daedalus during the Covid pandemic, years before modern generative AI was available to the general public. Much of the early work was drafted in Apple Notes and leveraged Apple's built in spelling and proofing tools, such as they were back then.

As large language models matured, I began using them in much the same way I would use a search engine, reference books or conversations with knowledgeable friends. They helped me research topics ranging from the practicalities of interstellar travel to the operation of a Vietnamese royal palace in the twenty-sixth century, and even the chemistry of barbecuing fish. They were also useful for checking continuity, exploring alternatives, challenging assumptions and occasionally pointing out mistakes I had overlooked.

I sometimes asked GPT to generate throwaway material that helped me think through scenes or technical details, such as presentation slides characters might prepare, or to sense-check the rules and play of a game of Five Hundred. These were working notes rather than text intended for publication.

Once the first complete draft was finished, I moved the manuscript into Apple's Pages, whose commenting and revision tools made it easier to manage continuity across many revisions. Over roughly twenty drafts, every chapter was rewritten, refined and edited by me. While AI assisted with research, discussion and occasional proofreading, the novel itself, its characters, plot, themes, structure and final prose are my own.

The temporary cover image was generated using AI as a placeholder during development. I intend to replace it with original commissioned artwork for the printed edition.
